The Special Counsel’s Decision Not To Prosecute

The report from special counsel Roburt Hur’s investigation into Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents set off a firestorm in the media landscape today, culminating in a last-minute press conference during which President Biden tried to push back on reports of his mental degradation and infirmity, but instead due to a number of mental fumbles and slip ups, he managed to make the case against himself.

There are so many Republicans Pounce narratives that were published this evening that it really is hard to pick one place to start, but first a little more back story. The pouncing really hinges on two major topics:

  • The double standard in the special counsel not recommending charges against Joe Biden while Donald Trump is still being pursued for a similar case regarding classified documents
  • The special counsel referring to Biden as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

The decision by special counsel Robert Hur not to recommend criminal charges against President Biden, despite uncovering evidence of willful retention and disclosure of classified materials, has ignited Republican criticism. This outcome starkly contrasts with the ongoing pursuit of charges against Donald Trump for related offenses, highlighting a perceived two-tiered system of justice.

Hur’s investigation revealed Biden’s improper retention of classified documents on military and foreign policy, including sensitive intelligence information. These findings, coupled with the differential treatment observed, underscore a blatant double standard in how such cases are approached, based on political affiliation.

In an attempt to deflect from this clear mishandling of classified information, multiple outlets published pounces focusing on Republicans reacting to the lack of charges rather than on the mishandling of classified information on the part of Biden.

  • Axios: Trump, Haley seize on Biden special counsel report
  • Politico: Trump, Haley slam decision in Biden classified documents case as unfair
  • The Hill: 5 takeaways from special counsel report on Biden’s classified documents - Republicans seize on report
  • The New York Times: Republicans criticize the decision not to prosecute Biden.

Also mentioned in Hur’s report, Joe Biden has some significant memory loss, and referred to him as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory”. Obviously, Republicans latched onto this message, with many wondering how he could continue as the Commander in Chief of our nation’s military, let alone the leader of our country, if he couldn’t even recall basic facts during Hur’s investigation.

In order to deflect from this issue, the media of course returned to the same Republicans Pounce well as before. Here are a few examples:

  • The Washington Times: ‘Well-meaning elderly man’: Republicans seize on Biden memory issues detailed in Hur report
  • The New York Times: Republicans Pounce on report that puts spotlight on Biden’s memory lapses.
  • Note: this was a live blog and they updated the headline afterward to “Republicans React to Special Counsel Report on Biden Documents: Live Updates”. Also, Libs of TikTok reports it was also updated to ‘My Memory Is Fine,’ a Defiant Biden Declares After Special Counsel Report

Even Just the News got in on some “Seizing”:

  • Republicans seize on special counsel’s remarks on Biden’s memory
